The historic city of Goose Creek is thought to be named for its local creek's gooseneck turns, although there are no sources confirming or denying this theory. According to local officials, though, this area has been known as Goose Creek since the late 1600s. Since then, the community has gone through multiple transitions, growing from a small pioneer settlement to a community of plantations run by immigrants from Barbados. During the 150 years that plantations guided the growth of Goose Creek, indigo, rice and other crops fueled the success of the community. Following the Civil War, the loss of slaves heavily influenced the face of the city, causing it to lose much of its business. Beginning in the 1960s, though, Goose Creek's population began to spike, and the city was forced to restructure and develop to facilitate its growth. Today, Goose Creek boasts a robust industry and population that has continued to grow and develop with the passing of time.
